Our History
Over a Century of Community and Sport
The Mildura Lawn Bowls Club, established on July 4, 1913, is the oldest in the Sunraysia region. A group of 20 men met at Risbey’s Chambers on Deakin Avenue to discuss forming the club. A committee was elected to assess the project's feasibility.
On March 6, 1914, the club purchased land on Lemon Avenue for £100. By October 21, 1915, the opening day was set for November 21. Electric lights were installed in 1916, enabling night play. Lady members were admitted to use two rinks for croquet. The club's first pavilion was built in 1922, followed by a locker room.
In 1932, the Mildura Winter Bowling Carnival was established, attracting 152 bowlers. By 1956, it became the largest bowls carnival in Australia, drawing over 700 entries. Special trains from Melbourne brought bowlers to Mildura.
In 1941, the club moved to Cureton Avenue. Grants facilitated the development of new greens and infrastructure, opening in 1943. In 1954, construction of a new clubhouse began, and it opened in 1955. The Carbis Room was added in 1967, and the club became licensed in 1968.
The Mildura Masters Singles was introduced in 1970 and continued until 1998. In 2005, the Mildura Bowls Club began sharing the Cureton Avenue complex with the Mildura Workers Bowls Club, formalising their partnership in 2018. Grants obtained in June 2022 led to refurbishment work starting in August 2023.
Mildura Lawn Bowls Club's history is a testament to its resilience and community spirit. With ongoing improvements and a strong sense of camaraderie, the club remains a vibrant part of Mildura's social fabric.
